VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Virtual Private Network as the name suggest it makes a private connection between a host and a server . The private connection is both secure and encrypted . whenever anyone try to hamper with the connection , the connection is terminated and a new connection to the server is formed via different set of routers (different path). VPN make use of tunneling protocols like PPTP(point to point tunneling protocol) , OpenVPN,L2TP/IPsec(Layer 2 Tunnel Protocol is a VPN protocol) and SSTP(Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol). PPTP is old and vulnerable, although integrated into common operating systems and easy to set up. Stay away.

Open VPN is secure, although you will need to install a third-party application. It uses open-source technologies like the OpenSSL encryption library and SSL v3/TLS v1 protocols. L2TP/IPsec is theoretically secure, but there are some concerns. It’s easy to set up, but has trouble getting around firewalls and isn’t as efficient as OpenVPN. Stick with OpenVPN if possible, but definitely use this over PPTP SSTP is a proprietary Microsoft protocol. It’s like OpenVPN, but mostly just for Windows and can’t be audited as fully. Still, this is better to use than PPTP. And, because it can be configured to use AES encryption, is arguably more trustworthy than L2TP/IPsec. VPN is of great use whenever you are in a country that has many banned sites like china , pakistan etc or if you want to watch TV shows which are banned in your country or if you are a HACKER !!! Hacker’s use VPN all the time to maintain their anonymity . A VPN server provides a hacker with a FAKE ip address. The fake address is of the country in which the server is located (mostly europe).VPN service provider dont keep logs of the people connected to the server, which is another advantage of using VPN. The real question is how do i connect to a VPN server ? To connect to a VPN server you need to have a username and a password of that server.Ofcourse there are free VPN sources, but when something is free its never that fast, always congested. There are many paid VPN like Hide My Ass or LogMeIn Hamachi or Tunnel Bear etc. They are easy to use and provide a wide range of option and may cost upto 5$ a month (check out their website for more info). To connect to a VPN on Windows 7, press the Windows key and, type VPN, and press Enter.

Enter the VPN address liken or the I.P address. You should also enter a destination name – this can be anything you like. It’s only used to help you remember which VPN connection is which.

Enter your login credentials on the next screen. Use the username and password your VPN provider gave you.

Enter the connect button and the connection will prevail.

VPN is a great tool to play around with but it has its disadvantages also, it doesnot provide a continious connection . if something happens then the connection is terminated .The VPN IP is shared by an unknown number of persons, and its usage is public as long as the person subscribe a contract to the VPN provider.

Therefore, by using a VPN:

You open yourself to attacks such as IP spoofing, it will be trivial for someone else to use the very same IP address than you, Possibly your IP address may be blacklisted due to the activity of another VPN user, which may result into limited or refused access into some websites..
